Feeling strange
 Feeling strange

In order to attend Elder Kwon’s funeral, (who had composed to my hymn poems for the last 30 years,) there was a schedule change needed to be done. It wasn’t too far of a trip, but I had to sleep down in Los Angeles on the way.

I went to my daughter’s place as usual on Friday, since she lived only 20 minutes from my senior apartment. Since she has 3 children to take care of, I would visit every Friday for her to have breathing room, and to see our cute granddaughters. My youngest, Carys is the most mature of all so she was the easiest to take care of, and the most interesting.

To attend Elder Kwon’s funeral on the 21st, I left for my daughter’s place on Tuesday the 17th. I had passed my daughter’s car on the road since she has school for 2 and half hours. Since seeing that we have arrived, Cary said that she desired for her mother, me and my wife to go to have lunch together.

Carys took us to her favorite Japanese restaurant by this chance.

After arriving home, she and I got into the car to get to the restaurant. On the way, she asked us, “Grandpa, how come you are visiting me today? Since you always visit me on Fridays when I do not have school?” I answered, “Since someone dear to me has recently passed away, so I had to change the date.” Suddenly, Carys who was sitting next to me started to cry out loud. I was with my daughter, but it was shocking so I asked, “Why are you crying?” and her answer were mesmerizing. “Whenever I heard someone die, it makes me sad and makes me cry.” I think it was unbelievable hearing this from and a three year old. I think from her children’s cartoon, she saw someone die and was reacting to that situation perhaps.

When we have nearly arrived, Carys said that whenever I arrived with my wife, it feels strange.  I asked her why such things happen. Her response was, since she uses English daily, but myself and my wife uses Korean, and does her mother. It makes her feel awkward that they only speak in Korean. She repeated the word, “this is San Jose” twice or so. I think it is because she feels isolated from the lack of understanding Korean, or some words she does not know of.

Thanks to my granddaughter’s care, we had delicious Japanese for lunch, and had Pete’s Coffee that my wife likes, and had a discussion with my very sensitive granddaughter, and had a wonderful, meaningful day.
