Power of word

One day while I was doing my daily walk, I noticed the elderly man driving his red sports car is no longer showing around. He lived in the hill around the middle of our walking course, and would always pass by his car and would wave, or even slow down and have fun conversations with him.

But for several days, I could not see him and was beginning to worry about him. Turns out he had a surgery because his joints were in difficulty, and he could no longer go where he went daily. While my wife and I am walking diligently, I noticed that he was walking small steps at a time very slowly to pick up the newspaper in the morning. His wife was no better either with her walking. Since he had problems with his joint, it was difficult for him to pick up the newspaper. When he saw me in the morning, he asked if I can pick up his newspaper, and I obliged and gladly picked up his newspaper, and he gave me his thanks.

From that day on, I would pick up his two different newspapers and leave them in a conveniently high location in a flower bed nearby. After about 3 months, I was doing the routine thing in the morning when the window opened and he greeted me with a smile and said, “I pray for you every Sunday!” even my smallest of help to him was very thankful to him. An American elderly gentleman praying for me every Sunday with his hurting body… I’m living a blessed life.

Sometimes when I take my walk, I notice there is a truck that comes loaded with bread. It’s a well known bakery. There are several residential areas around where I reside. Elderly people living from houses, townhouses, fancy apartments, or fancy nursing house, there is also a nursing hospital, and finally government operated apartment.

Those who resides in the government operated apartment makes own food. But the others mentioned above, have large cafeterias to eat. They receive high quality bread and pay high price for the food there. When I go to and come back from office work, there are many waiters going home for the night.

One day, the truck driver of the bread delivery man honked his horn and stopped me in my walk. He pointed at my hat, laughing saying he didn’t like the team logo on my hat. He likes the Boston Red Sox. My hat I usually wear during my walk is “New York Yankees”. In the Eastern United States, the two pro-baseball teams mentioned above were long time nemesis.

Some don’t even like to look at each other if they see their opposing team’s logo on their hat. I didn’t wear it because I liked the team, I only wore it because it was the one that I had.

The very next day I wore a hat with no logo on it. The truck driver once again honked at me and when I looked, he gave me a very satisfied thumbs-up. To change one’s personality is not an easy task. Even myself, I changed my hat because of the one conversation I had with the delivery man, changing my old hat and wearing a new one instead. The thing I understood was the power of the word. Because of the elderly man who is having difficulty walking, asking me to pick up his newspaper had changed my behavior as well. It also made him pray for me because of my actions. So did my changing of my hat because of the bread delivery personnel, just to entertain and make each other in joy.
