How to Serve? (John 15:13)

“There is no greater love than a person risking their life for their friend.”

While the American Civil War was raging, President Abraham Lincoln would visit wounded soldiers. Speaking to one of the dying soldiers, he asked, “Is there anything I can do for you?” and then soldier replied, “Please write a letter to my mother.” The soldier dictated that despite him passing away, do not be sad, and words of love to his siblings. After that, he was too faint to speak. After writing the letter, Abraham Lincoln added, “I, Abraham Lincoln write this letter in place of your dear son.”

The dying soldier wanted to look that the letter that Lincoln wrote. He was surprised that the president himself had written the letter. The soldier asked if he was the president and Lincoln replied, “I am.” President Lincoln asked, “What can I do for you?” and the soldier replied “Can you hold my hand?” with that dying breathe; he held the president’s hand as he passed away.

Maya Angelou once said, “If you can find the heart and desire to help someone else, then you have succeeded in Life.” That being said is a huge challenge to even us Christians.

Jesus said that “For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) The president of the United States, one of the best of the best, the only thing he could do was to write a letter and hold the soldier’s hand as he passed away. But the Son of God, Jesus came and rescued us from the Satan’s attacks and of death.

He died in the cross for us in our place. We were to be judged to death unto God. Because the “Price of Sin is death.” But “For the wages of Sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Jesus gave use the life, when were like the dying soldiers. Why? It is because of love. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, in the future he still loves us still. He will still love us forever.

People like us who have received love should be able to serve our neighbors in any situation.
