The arches of the sky
The arches of the sky

From the news I heard that the severity of this drought was first in 100s of years. One of the reservoirs that hold water for drinking only had 12% of water left. The “Evening News” which is shown to the entire United States at the same time, shows the reservoirs drying out, as well as the farmlands that had dried up to reveal a cracked tortoise-shell like pattern.
When I get on the internet, I check the weather routinely. To see if there is any chance of rain…Last week’s forecast predicted, it would all be sunshine for few days. But when I was praying and meditating upon the Word one Sunday early morning, I heard something strange outside. It was raining! I rolled up the blinds and looked out the window. It wasn’t visible. So it was raining, but not a lot. The only reason why it sounded like it was pouring was because the rain droplets hitting the dried leave of trees nearby. I was so glad it was raining.
When I went out to walk with my wife around 7AM in the morning, the welcoming raindrops wet my face. I was about to head back in to grab an umbrella but my wife said “It’s better to get wet by the rain because it was so welcoming.” True, I had a hat on so there wasn’t much to worry about. I started to walk with strength. After about 30 minutes of walking and returning, at the 10 minute mark, there was a great arch of rainbow when we looked up into the sky. It was rare to see a rainbow in February, but when we walked a bit further down, there was another rainbow! Bigger also!
I remember during my elementary school, where a Japanese Korean student wrote “The Hill with Double Rainbows yonder”. I don’t remember any of the stories at all now. But when I saw the double rainbow, I remembered. After God had judged the world with flood, he gave Noah a covenant to never flood the world again with a rainbow. The welcoming rain continued on and on when I arrived at the worship service place 9:30AM in the morning. During the service we sang hymn #172.
Last Friday when I visited my daughter, my 7 year old granddaughter was having snacks after school. There was a small part of rain. When I asked her why the rain was important, she answered: “Without rain, there isn’t any water to drink, or shower, or grow crops.” I think she learned that from school. But it is a true story. Since water is directly in need to live, there is no way to sustain life without it.
While I am writing this, I am glad that the next Thursday, there would be a lot more rain in the forecast. I am so happy about that. But to quench the drought, there would be as much as four more times rain in order to quench it. Hopefully God will hear our prayers, and with sympathy, give us more rain plentifully.
