The crow and a walnut.
The crow and a walnut.

The weather had felt cooler recently. Since the area I reside has a lot of trees and close to the hills nearby, it’s only natural the difference in temperature from the cities nearby. Now days around 6:45AM when I come out for our daily walk, I see the bright sun coming out strong behind the southern hills. During the evenings around 7PM the moon, lights its face during the night time.

Now days I walk around like the Honor Guard, swinging my arm. Several of the elderly Koreans, Chinese, even the Americans think it’s something new and they try it themselves, or some, even smile and encourages me. When I walk around, I always see cars passing by when people head to work, or to drop off their children in their schools. I always wave my hand at all the people who are driving, to have a great morning in work, and during the evenings, I wave my hand again for “good job”. Almost everyone responds happily. So I also feel great, and get encouraged.

Some, whom I cannot see because I am behind, would honk their handle lightly, and pass by waving and smiling at me. Over time in the many months, I have made many friends. I do not know their addresses, nor their names but friends indeed. My wife sometimes jokingly told me to try out for the city council member. But waving a hand and smiling is not a lot of work, it’s just raise my arm, wave and smile while walking.

In the course where we walk have a lot of acorn trees. But since they are the improved plants, not a lot of acorns have opened. Since it is autumn now, there should be a plenty of acorns dropping, but since many of them are eaten by the squirrels, I look for any of the ones that are dropped. Most of them have been eaten by bugs or have become rotten. My wife also who likes acorn jelly, tries to pick up some, and are also not very good.

From the apartment, we walk up a hill for about 25 minutes and then come back, walking a total of 50 minutes every day. Several people I meet ask me the way to live healthy, and I tell them to “eat small amounts, exercise regularly, and have a peace in your mind.” Like the dictionary. It’s because I do not know another solution. I do not eat any of the newly popular traditional medications, nor the fermented things. Even if I do eat it, doing no exercise, getting stressed, will have no benefit at all.

After getting to the top of the hill and heading down for about 10 minutes, we were able to witness the smartness of the crow. A baby crow flew over my head, and it looked like it was born this year perhaps. It flew towards the roads with the cobblestone for the houses, and dropped a round, circular object! There was a sound an object cracking, and something small popped up in the air.  I ran towards the direction to see what it was, and it was a small walnut. There are few walnut trees, and the roads were dirty with dropped walnut outer skins. The baby crow wanted to eat the walnut, and dropped the ripe fruit with its shell to break it. At that moment, I wanted to pick up the walnut. It would be a nice story to tell. I was going to go pick up the walnut, but the bird seeing that, picked up the walnut in its mouthful and flew up.

During our morning exercise, it is always refreshing to see the trees and the sunlight, as the leaves turn red and yellow, the birds singing its songs. During the evening, with the roads darkening in the long avenue of roads between the apartments, I hear the crickets chirping. I am always thankful of that.

I thank God that I was able to witness the slyness of the crow this morning.
