Habits
Change from repeated habits

When my wife and I go outside for daily walk 6:30AM in the morning. I met an elderly Korean lady who is walking around the parking area. When I moved here last December, I saw someone I knew who was living here before. She was a church member from my planted church while ago, and also a reverend’s wife was living here so I visited her. She was there both times. Whenever I finish speaking with them and pray before I leave, the reverend’s wife always said to pray for that lady also. She had very bad diabetes and had several surgeries. Her eye sight isn’t too well either, so she had a surgery for that too.

I had prayed dearly for the reverend’s wife and her. After her eye surgery, she wasn’t able to head outside for while, but started to walk again. She slowly increased her distance of walking until she started to walk around the area. After several months, her walking pose had become more stable, and much faster. So whenever she sees us now days, she would greet us gladly. In the beginning, it was hard for her to walk, but persisting on, she was able to recover her health.

Many of the residing elderly people, from the Americans to Chinese, and other ethnic groups, there are several Korean elderly people who also walk in certain time as a habit. As of now, there are 29 elderly Koreans who resides. Out of them, 10 or so of them walk regularly on a schedule.  It’s a lot higher in ratio to the other ethnic elderly people. One of the elderly gentlemen there gives a great impression of habits. He is in his late 80s. But he is very tall, with white hair. He always walks while swinging his arm strongly front and back. He looks 10 years younger that way. His walking speed looks like he didn’t walk for only one or two days, but for many years. His age is very high but his back is not stooped. Persistence in exercise keeps the body posture stable.

One of the elderly couple who lives there, the lady always walks alone in the morning and with her husband during the afternoon. They both look over 80, but they walk very rapidly. Especially the husband had a heart surgery. But they eat well, and their looks are of younger from the exercises. It shows how life can be changed.

As one gets older, it is harder to exercise daily. It’s because there is no one there to tell you that. After short time period, the persistence of exercising seizes. Also it’s because the body is harder to move around. It has to be natural to walk outside during the chosen time, to have exercise. It is much harder to do it from just thought.

I was always lacking in physical fitness as a child. I never enjoyed physical education especially in the field. It’s because I was the weakest, and when I ran with other children, I was the last. Usually when I did running during all-school field exercise event, I was last as always.
That is why I started to exercise to keep my health about 20 or more years ago. My blood sugar level is slightly over 100, so I was warned by the doctor. But the doctor tells me that everything else is excellent and was congratulated for it. It shows so well, how all the elderly who keep their health from their persistence and habit of walking or doing any exercise.
