When someone says “grass” most people would instantly think of the color “green”. But in the city of Saratoga where I reside, and the rest of California, the color is currently yellow instead.
About 3 years ago, when my daughter had moved in her new house, there was no such garden in the back. Since the grass was laid many months after, the grass was placed in after about 2 years. But some time, my son in law had stopped watering the garden in the back, and it slowly started to fade, and turned into yellow and all died.
It’s not just my daughter’s place, it is happening all around us. It is because of the severe drought that is happening in California. It was so critically low in rain that it was now endangering the water supply for drinking. The governor of California had ordered a statewide shutdown of water supply usage to about 1/3rd. If some houses did not do so, there was a warning, followed by a fine.
I think the places where the grass is dying, is not because of the fear of having a hefty fine, but of well-educated citizens acting on behalf of the nature. The apartment that I reside is in a government land, in a particularly rich neighborhood. Every morning I walk around the neighbor and notice all the large houses’ grass is all growing yellow. Is it because of the large fine? I think as a democratic citizen, the home owners are following the order of the governor despite the house looking messy and ugly with yellow grass.
Because of that, on the TV there are many advertisement of artificial grass. I think it is a on a rather high demand. Interestingly enough, there was a pigment that was developed that is safe to human body, whereas the pigment is applied on the yellowing grass; it would look green and stays like that for 3 months.
The population in Silicon Valley is rising. Apple, Google, Yahoo, etc all have rising population in their workforce, causing a severe problem in the housing development. Because of population rise, and having to build many houses, there are so many shortages happening. This area with a click of a finger can see and view the reality of what is happening around this place, and if the problem persists, California would be in serious trouble. The worst area off is the Mid-Peninsula’s large farms and orchards. Since the farming water usage is halved, the amount of things being harvested is only by half. What is there to plant when the ground is drying out and cracking? Since there is no water available readily, there is no way to harvest as much as the farm wants.
If such thing is persisting, the greed of humanity to proper would be put to shame at last. It is the time when having something to drink and water is enough to be called rich. To save for days ahead, and to share around with others is not familiar, it is hard for the society to continue on. It is to think and question what California would have to do with harsh future, since the state was always in prospect. To see what humans can do to the unknown future.
