TV Announcers

There are many large trees around the senior apartment that I currently reside. As you follow the westerly route there is a very tall mountain. Because of geo – locations, there aren’t too many channels to surf on the TV. The channels are very limited if one does not have the Cable set up. But thankfully, there is a channel called KEMS that broadcasts KBS (Korea Broadcasting System) to hear the news of what is happening in Korea.
I know there are many popular TV shows in Korea so they get broadcasted in United States. But unlike the time when I was in Korea, I think the thought process and the value moral had changed a lot in Korea. Since there is more time to relax in living, There now far more entertainment purpose driven TV programs as they are for entertainment.

But I have no particular interest in any of those channels and instead watch the news at 9PM. The nuclear armament / testing issues in North Korea, many natural disasters, the earthquake from KyungJu, much election news, the politics, and the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping Company, many of the news are disheartening.  Especially with North Korea’s 5th nuclear testing was of most concern. As they are unpredictable, there is no way to see if a severe reaction may happen if a war might break out or not. Not only that, Korea is also divided amongst the nation over the THAAD placement. There are many presidential nominees but none of them prove to be worthy to bear the future of Korea.

While watching the news of Korea, sometimes I change the channel to see what is happening here around locally and I see so many drastic changes in feeling.

Many of the announcers are young. Some are in their 40s, 50s regardless of gender. Some even appear over 60. I don’t think all the pretties women became announcers. As we live here, there is no such thing as beautiful woman who would want to be a announcer. But I guess the way people are chosen and the time of how long they can work as announcer is different to Korea.

Many of the women I see appear for announcement in the morning time for national news I have noticed frequently some of them clearly pregnant. But they run the program like per usual. As I am the viewer, it is glad thing to see. When I change to local news to see the traffic situation, many of the announcers are also clearly pregnant – some even advanced in the pregnancy. I see that it shows the woman fair chance to work as they got married while being pregnant and yet be able to serve the society.

When I see many of the TV announcers in Korea, many of them are extremely pretty. I have never seen anyone doing the weather channel or any while pregnant. I think this may be the cultural difference.

As the Western influence slowly seeps into Korea, Korea had become the fashion show market for other cultures. But seeing that the over usage of ‘pretty woman’ has not died down still. I think of plastic surgery even spreading to the men. As women get married and have children, it is harder for them to head to work, ignoring the experience they have, changing out announcers so often, to raise awareness to the value of individuals – surely maturing in that form is still a long way to go.

I turned on the TV this morning and saw that in the local weather channel, the woman who had run the morning channel along with the weather forecast is still the same as I have seen them when I moved to Southern California way back in 1993.
